Day 19 WA Challenge – Content Marketing Strategy Anyone…

Something Different

Something Different

Thursday 31st July – A Little Different

Writing this element the day prior (Wednesday)

I wanted to set my objectives in advance and see how things may change.

Objective (set yesterday)
Create a piece of content page or post that I feel is good enough to also create a YouTube video about.

Add YouTube video and publish it.

Time allowing ‘brand’ my YouTube Channel profile.

OK so now I’ve come back on Thursday to finish the post.

The post I decided to create is on niche selection.

Niche selection is a real deal-breaker of a decision.

Get it wrong and hundreds of hours could be wasted!

In researching this post I also wanted to represent the best thinking I could find on the subject.

Which in turn has lead me to question my approach with this site  😕

I like the challenge type idea. Love those goal based real life reality type shows.

But should I niche down further than folks interested in making money online using the Wealthy Affiliate training resources?

I think the answer is YES…

I’ll sleep on this.

How Did I Do Against My Objectives?…

Badly  😥

Well I’ve written quite a lot of the niche selection post. But sidetracked myself reading all the interesting content.

How can I compete with such good content?

More words…

More Images…

Videos?

Everything – throw the kitchen sink at it.

Undecided will sleep on this too!

Obviously no Video created or produced either.

Good News

Did manage to create and publish a page on my content marketing strategy. 😀

Born of the indecision regarding the niche post. I suddenly got the need to define my strategy in a page chronologically tracking how it might change over time.

Having never ever kept a personal diary or journal. I quite like the idea of recording my objectives for the next day, and then seeing how I  actually do against them.

I think this maybe quite self illuminating….

I hope this may also be more interesting if anyone reads it.

Output

Missed all objectives.

Added a Content Marketing Strategy page.

Time Taken

2 hours researching Niche Selection

1 hour writing my niche selection post (not complete)

1 hour writing and publishing a page on my content marketing strategy.

Days 17 and Day 18 – Wealthy Affiliate Must Know…

Must Know journal post... struggling for inspiration

Must Know journal post... struggling for inspirationTuesday 29th July 2014

Started writing a ‘getting started’ page.

The idea to provide help for anyone looking to start with WA.

Writers BLOCK!

Not that I’m a writer, but I just couldn’t get going.

So just wrote stuff in the WordPress editor without thinking to much.

2 hours later I had some stuff I liked.

And a lot I didn’t  😕

Decided it wasn’t a ‘getting started’ page.

So my “Wealthy Affiliate 5 Things Everyone Should Know Before They Start” or ‘Must-Know’ (as it shows in the header navigation) page was born.

Still not loving it, but it’s important to keep moving forward.

Saved as draft.

Had a glass of wine with Susanne as I helped cook dinner  😛

Wednesday 30th July 2014

Finished and posted the ‘Must Know’ page.

Added some images and though I’m still so-so about it, decided to hit publish.

Also added the privacy page which I had forgotten.

Linked my sidebar About Me widget with my  profile page on Wealthy Affiliate.

The other idea I had.

Was to write my daily objectives the day before. To really see how things pan out.

Objective
To create a getting started page.

Outcome
Created a 5 Things You Must Know About WA Before Getting Started

Time Taken
About 3 hours

My Content Marketing Strategy

content creation training

Wealthy Affiliate Content Marketing Strategy

What Is Content Marketing ?

Content marketing is any marketing that involves the creation and sharing of media and publishing content in order to acquire customers. This information can be presented in a variety of formats, including news, video, white paperse-booksinfographics, case studies, how-to guides, question and answer articles, photos, etc. Wikipedia.

The above definition is almost right for my situation.

Personally I am not directly selling anything.

I’m an affiliate for Wealthy Affiliate and get paid a commission if someone joins WA  from this website.

I am a student and paid member of WA and my concept is that of setting myself a challenge and recording my journey and results (good or bad).

Using TV's The Biggest Loser as an example of the popularity of real life challenge format contentThis is obviously not a unique concept, it’s done all the time in reality TV (think Biggest Loser) and on the Internet through countless 30, 90 day challenge variations.

I personally enjoy watching / reading these challenges because you get the journey towards the goal complete with all the emotional and instructional content.

I plan on updating this page as and when anything significant changes. But not deleting what went before so the page may chronologically reflect the journey.

So what is my content marketing strategy…

Ultimately I want to create an evergreen and evolving site that occupies my main online marketing efforts.

My personal objectives are more about creating a very small ‘lifestyle’ business that doesn’t require me to put in 8 hour shifts.

If you’ve read “The 4 Hour Work Week” By Timothy Ferris you’ll know what I mean.

Site Content Plan

Initially this is going to be journal posting combined with adding more detailed posts and pages.

The posts and pages are going to be about Internet Marketing / Content Marketing written from the perspective of a student who has some basic site building experience.

The promotion of Wealthy Affiliate and any other products and services to be understated rather than hype.

Also I want to showcase other peoples success stories adding mine as they hopefully ( 😛 ) develop.

I would I like to add and potentially test other online marketing strategies. An example would be Amazon product review and comparison sites.

I would like the site to grow into an ‘authority’ site (50 post / pages plus) and am prepared for this to take a long time. Initially I’d hoped that by 90 day’s I’d be seeing 7,000 plus visitors a month. But concede in this niche I may have to wait longer… we’ll see.

It’s Not IF but WHEN…

The above statement may have to become my mantra.

So in a nutshell…

  • First 90 days create as much unique quality content as I can.
  • 30 Days have created a network of ‘profile’ syndication sites to promote this site (more on this below)
  • Re purpose my best content into as many mediums as I’m able (video, pdf, image, article etc) and share through my syndication network.

Also wanted to emphasize a point Kyle makes in the WA training, that the early content should not be all about keywords. Rather about quality and what feels right.

What Is A Profile Syndication Network?

I read an SEO article recently that appealed.

Search Engine Optimization unfortunately comes with the territory if you’re marketing content.

However if your over zealous with your SEO Google penalises your site lowering or removing it from their rankings 😥 .

The biggest cause of penalties being that of overly aggressive use of back link building. Back links being the links to your sites from others on the Internet. In overly simplistic terms the idea being the site with the most links rises the highest in Google search engine results.

But you need links?

By building a network of personal profile web 2.0 sites surely I risk being penalised?

I hope not.

Back to the article (unfortunately I can’t remember exactly who’s it was… sorry).

Anyway the idea is to build a network of premium quality profile (put your own name and brand to them) sites…

  • WordPress.org
  • Tumblr
  • YouTube
  • Redditt
  • Pintrest
  • Blogger
  • Slideshare

The above is a very short list of examples, there are many more.

You then promote / share fantastic content on these sites that you think people will like.

NOT just your content!

In fact possibly as little as 30% of the content should link back to you.

No spam, no unreadable spun crap, no overt look at my stuff messaging.

Done correctly I should see both back links, but more importantly visitors…

In my opinion this sounds like a good way of doing back linking?

I’ve never done this, so am keen to test it, but worried it may take too much time?

Another of my personal challenges was to try and use a lot more video marketing, so we’ll also see how that goes…

Please ask any questions, suggest any improvement in the comment below.

Thanks for reading.

November 2016

results-nov-2016-featured
My results promoting Wealthy Affiliate using the skills I'm learning

Wealthy Affiliate Challenge Results - Nov 2016

For this post to make sense you must read my prior results here...

Next let's look at my short term goals results summary...

(Set 11th Oct 2016 - Updated 17th Nov 2016)

1. List Building. Build my list to 5000 subscribers (293 11th Oct 16 - Now 364 according to Active Campaign a 22% increase over the month.)

2. Help my subscribers more (not sure how to measure this but I wanted it listed) - Sharing more content that I love and the resources I use to achieve stuff... 🙂

3. Test and implement a new list building idea (will document as progress) - more below...

4. Write product reviews for 3 additional products that I like and use. Done ...ish, more below.

5. Journal my actions, process, and results consistently within a period I can live with (less than 2 years - probably bi-weekly). Looks like Monthly.

My site wide challenge for this site is to build up it's average earnings from the Wealthy Affiliate program to $1,000 per month.

So I need to add metrics into my short term goals template above to make reporting easier.

For now over the last 24 months I've earned $10571 which is a monthly average of $440.45

The other metric I wanted to share was how many new premium members I get per month. The two year average is 4.41 per month.

However the last 12 month average is only 2.66 per month...

Which is either due to my getting worse at conversion or a reflection of the increased competition from other WA affiliates.

Guess which I'm blaming?

A side note for those wanting to promote WA. The folks that do really well promoting WA tend to use the protecting people from online scams angle as taught in the WA bootcamp.

Personally I don't enjoy writing about crap products, so I rarely do it.

Though I probably should.

Product reviews I have done

Shiny Object Lemonade - A Warrior special offer (product of the day) from Lee Murray. Really enjoyed this... great read, inspiring angle, proven affiliate strategy.

Evergreen Affiliate Profits - Love the idea of this training... gives you ONE great affiliate program to promote in the dog training niche and teaches ONE free traffic method to promote it. Simple.

I did buy a few more products for review, but didn't like them enough to bother with.

List Building / Email Marketing

Though I've specified my list target at 5000 subscribers I'm not wanting to compromise on quality. Meaning I want subscribers interested in affiliate marketing who'll be opening my emails.

The image below shows a steady 2 new subscribers per day which hasn't changed from last month, but unsubscribes have gone down from 1 a day.

I'm very much learning the whole email marketing piece, I know it's the right way to go but I want to make sure I learn how to add value for subscribers before going all out to add new ones.

Helpful stuff...

Currently I'm liking the post title image idea as used on this post. It gives me a chance to add color to otherwise text heavy content. I use a great program called Photoscrape to do this. Quick easy and free.

I use the Thrive Content Builder for editing WordPress. It's a premium plugin that makes editing in WordPress fun.

For example it allows me to design content templates like the one above for my short term goals. I can then simply add and edit these templates to any content I wish.

This saves me a lot of time and helps me become more creative.

Check out this video review of the Thrive Content Builder here...

Wealthy Affiliate – 5 Things Everyone Should Know Before They Start

Before starting Wealthy Affiliate Know These 5 Things #1 It Works!
Getting Started - The 4 steps to making money online

Focus And Take ACTION

In A Nutshell

The above graphic illustrates a 4 step proven formula for making money on the Internet.

  • No magic buttons
  • No secret loopholes
  • No BS

and…

It WORKS! (#1)

Before starting Wealthy Affiliate Know These 5 Things #1 It Works!

Wealthy Affiliate Really Works!

Read about some of the no prior experience real people success stories here, if in doubt.

On a more grounded level It requires serious HARD WORK (#2)

Success following the Wealthy Affiliate training really does require hard work.... sorry.

Hard Work Required

The training is great, it teaches anyone how to find great ideas and create compelling reader / watcher content.

Content is typically written, but can also / alternatively be video or image based.

The success stories are real inspiring, but most of these folks struggled for the first three months.

Google typically ‘sandboxes’ new sites for 1 – 3 months depending on who you listen to.

This means for many the first 3 months are hard work with little positive feedback from the big ‘G’.

Yes; there are many other ways of getting visitors other than from search engines alone. But the first three months within WA are all about creating a real long-term quality website.

And the content required to do that (minimum 3 good articles per week) for one person is a lot of work.

#3 It’s A Steep Learning Curve

The WA training gets you moving very fast. It is however a steep learning curve. Take your time.If you’ve never done anything like this before, give yourself a little time.

Most people (me) want to gobble up the training in a couple of days, and be making money at the end of the week.

Some folks are blessed with super retentive memories, but for the majority (me again) it’s better to take a little time and refer back to the training / community support (so good) as often as required.

But think of that hungry man analogy…

Be nice to give him food.

But better to teach him to fish.

Get this stuff right, and you’ve taught yourself how to make money independent of the man…

#4 You’ll Likely Mess It Up!

Never give up - keep falling forward....

Never Give Up!

It’s the reason you get two free websites with the basic Wealthy Affiliate membership.

You can test things out, learn from mistakes, or simply start afresh.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised how easy the website building and techie stuff is.

But as you learn more, and progress your ideas are likely to change.

What seemed a great idea when you did the niche discovery training, suddenly fills you with dread when it comes to creating content.

All good…

Roll with the blows, keep falling forward.

Finally The Devious Wealthy Affiliate Sales Strategy (#5)…

WA are guilty of using one of the most powerful psychological selling techniques ever created…

Reciprocity

Leveraging reciprocity is a fantastic foundation for a business... Wealthy Affiliate teaches you how.

Reciprocity definition – Reciprocity in social psychology refers to responding to a positive action with another positive action, rewarding kind actions. As a social construct, reciprocity means that in response to friendly actions, people are frequently much nicer and much more cooperative than predicted by the self-interest model; conversely, in response to hostile actions they are frequently much more nasty and even brutal. http://ift.tt/KQMsg3

WA Profits From Repository And So Will You

Meaning Wealthy Affiliate is a business and needs some paying customers to cover the overheads and provide Kyle and Carson with pocket money (they look very young to me 😛 ).

So they give us a fantastic free experience, great training, community, websites, and hope…

We rightly love it, and upgrade to premium membership asap.

Personally I think this is the coolest way I’ve ever been sold to.

And I would suggest that’s the ethos of the training.

Kyle and Carson know that the most money is earned by helping people BEFORE looking for anything in return.

The training teaches people how their business can benefit from the LAW of Reciprocity…

So build your website / business on the sound foundations of reciprocity by clicking the image below…

Making Money Promoting Clickbank Products

Making Money On Clickbank Promoting Other Peoples Products...

Clickbank is a marketplace for digital products (http://ift.tt/wgUddw).

What's great about Clickbank is the huge selection of products to choose from.

Like any other market not all the product are good...

But what is good is that 90% of the products on Clickbank give affiliates automatic ability to promote them.

No application or any other jumping through hoops required.

like the look of a product... get your unique affiliate link... promote it... hopefully make money 🙂

Picking the right products to promote is the most important part of the process...

Gael from AuthorityHacker.com is going to show you their process for selecting Clickbank offer to promote.

It's worth noting that Gael made $37k promoting Clickbank offers in their FIRST year.

Gael knows how to pick good products...

Quick summary of the video...

Gael looks for Clickbank Gravity of over 20 (means affiliates have sold this product over the last 12 weeks... if they can we can?)

Gael's not put of by a low front end price if the product offers upsells and recurring elements that can increase your average commission earned.

You can easily pause, rewind and fast forward the video if you want to clarify any points... this is good training from an honest marketer.

...So Gael has now found a good product from Clickbank what does he do next?

Let's take a look...

Gael is not your average affiliate... and here's why...

Authority Hacker - How To Make Money On Clickbank

Gael goes to a lot of effort to collect email addresses of people interested in the product topic (Paleo in the example) and to add value (the free quick start guide).

By collecting email addresses and building a list of people interested in Paleo Gael has given himself the opportunity to market other relevant products further down the line...

This is very smart.

Let's dig a little deeper...

1. Gael first selected his affiliate product to promote from Clickbank.

2. Then decided upon and created his lead capture incentive (a Paleo checklist guide).

3. Email marketing set up comes next. This is a 'thank you' for people that opt-in to get the freebie, and a series of 3 emails which Gael has pre-written that will go out 1 per day after somebody had opted in.

The Clickbank product will be linked to from the thank you page and from one or more of the email follow ups.

4. An on topic article that's sole purpose is to PROMOTE the free incentive (capture leads). Gael does not even link to the product at this point!

5. Gael uses paid advertising to drive targeted traffic to his article (Facebook and Outbrain in his example).

6. Gael also uses paid re-targeting advertising to promote his opt-in page to visitors to his article that didn't optin first time.

Wow!

That's a pretty slick set up.

This is the approach that has made Gael a lot of money and one we can all learn from.
